Tourism-CCIA tool

General Introduction

The Tourism-CCIA tool provides a platform for the analysis of climate change impacts on tourism focusing on trends, seasonality, income and water demand. It serves as: (i) a well-organized repository for storing and visualizing data related to climate and tourism, and (ii) a GIS-based tool for analysing data and performing calculations on the basis of the Tourism Climate Index (TCI, Mieczkowski, 1985), as a measure of the attractiveness of a region for tourism.

The tool has been developed within the framework of the WASSERMed (Water Availability and Security in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean) EC-FP7 Project, Work Package 4.3 .

Methodology and Functionalities
  • Display and spatial analysis of climate and tourism-related data
    • Time series and gridded data
    • Comparison of datasets (different time periods or climate projections for different IPCC scenarios)
  • Calculation of the Tourism Climate Index (TCI)
    • Current and projected values
  • Assessment of climate change impacts on the tourism sector
    • Regression analysis of TCI to tourism-related parameters
    • Estimation of future tourism pattern (trends and seasonality)
    • Associated impacts on income generation and water demand
  • Two scales for analysis: Mediterranean and local
