Dionysis Assimacopoulos



Professor Emeritus Dionysis Assimacopoulos is the Coordinator of the Environmental and Energy Management Research Unit

Born in Athens, Greece (1950), he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessalonica, Greece (1974). He undertook his post-graduate studies (Ph.D) in the field of System Analysis at the Electrical Engineering Department of Queen Mary College, University of London (1979).

He has been teaching at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) since 1981, and was full Professor at the School from 2004 until his retirement in 2017.

Courses taught at the undergraduate level (School of Chemical Engineering of the NTUA): Applied Thermodynamics, Transport Phenomena and Computational Methods of Transport Phenomena since 1982 and Rational and Sustainable Energy Management since 2013.

He was responsible for the M.Sc. Course “Energy Management Systems and Environmental Protection” at the Interdepartmental Post-graduate Program of “Industrial Business Administration”, from 1998 until 2014.

Other activities include:

  • Member of the Board of the Greek National Center for the Environment and Sustainable Development (2017 - ).
  • Member of the Board of EYDAP from May 2010 to April 2013; vice-president from 2012 until March 2013.
  • Project and Proposal Evaluator.
  • Executive Editor of Global NEST: the International Journal, from 1998 until 2005.
  • Peer reviewer for Scientific Journals.
  • Academic visitor at the Computational Fluid Dynamics Unit of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Imperial College, London (1986). He collaborated with Professors D.B. Spalding and G.F. Hewitt for developing computational techniques and simulation methods for two-phase flow.

His current research interests focus on:

  • Environmental Management and Protection.
  • Water Resources Management; Water Supply in stressed areas; Desalination.
  • Climate Change Adaptation.
  • Energy conservation & Regional energy planning with renewable energy sources.
  • Renewable energy sources and applications in remote areas.
  • Drought Planning and Policy; Drought modelling, characterization, monitoring and forecasting; Drought Vulnerability Assessment.
  • Computer-aided analysis of complex systems.
  • Geographical Information Systems.
  • Artificial Intelligence; Expert systems for automated process control.
  • E-learning technologies and e-applications.
  • Information systems for decision support.


He has participated in many research projects at both national and European/International level, as coordinator, principal investigator or scientific consultant, and is the author of numerous publications in scientific journals, conferences, and research reports.
