The Biella Textile Industry - Features

The district of Biella covers an area of 930 km², and is located in the NW of Piedmont Region.

The district hosts 82 communities, and is one of the most significant areas for the textile industry worldwide, especially with regard to wool and cashmere products manufacturing. The area concentrates industrial groups that are internationally known and have a long historical tradition, as well as many SMEs producing high quality products.

Currently, local textile industries have a significant impact on water exploitation, water pollution and economic/social aspects; wastewater parameter averages are in line with national regulations.

In addition, sewage sludge is only partially utilised for agriculture due to its low quality, and as a consequence some needs to be incinerated. The incineration incurs additional costs, whereas sludge could constitute a valuable resource to the local agricultural production.
