Renewable Energy Sources

The mandatory course "Renewable Energy Sources" is taught in the 3rd Semester of the MSc Programme on Energy and Environmental Management, organised jointly by the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Piraeus.

The course is coordinated by Prof. D. Assimacopoulos, with additional lectures provided by Prof. G. Tsiligiridis, Dr. G. Karalis, Dr. P. Baltas and other invited speakers. The course is also supported by faculty members and postgraduate students of the Environmental and Energy Management Research Unit.
 

Aims

The course focuses on the analysis of current and emerging energy management issues and the provision of expert knowledge on Renewable Energy Sources and their potential contribution to a more sustainable energy production.

 

Syllabus Description

The syllabus covers the following topics:

  • Current and emerging energy management/production issues.
  • Estimation and analysis of regional renewable energy potential.
  • Renewable Energy exploitation technologies and system design.
  • Technological and Economic evaluation of Renewable Energy systems.
  • Policies for the penetration of renewable energy sources in regional energy planning.
  • Strategies and policies towards a more sustainable development of the energy sector.

Technological fields examined are wind energy, biomass, solar thermal systems, photovoltaics, passive architecture systems and small hydroelectric plants.
