Introduction

The “Water and Health” Symposium, organized within the framework of INECO, was held on Wednesday, May 23rd 2007 at the Conference Hall of the Children’s Hospital of the Mansoura University. The event was organized in two scientific sessions (meetings) and one discussion session.

Symposium Recommendations

  1. Promote environmental awareness and activate the motto "Drop of water equals life"
  2. Support community outreach programs aimed at rationalizing water use and eliminating water pollution practices
  3. Use modern irrigation methods to reduce water waste
  4. Limit the use of pesticides and fertilizers to the prescribed quantities only
  5. Rationalize the use of detergents, as they impact on water quality
  6. Enforce all laws for prohibiting the disposal of industrial wastes without full treatment.
  7. Expand drainage and sanitation networks in villages and establish an integrated system for solid waste management.
  8. Apply the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management
  9. Supporting research projects targeting the water and sanitation sector
  10. Establish specific standards for water reservoirs and ensure their continuous cleaning throughout the year
  11. Reduce uncontrolled urban development and expansion
  12. Implement medium scale water and sewage treatment plants
  13. Tighten controls on the Damietta furniture industries (spray booths) and their industrial drainage
  14. Enforcing the application of the law penalizing wasteful water use
  15. Enforcing the application of the law penalizing the discharge of untreated industrial and agricultural effluents and waste disposal in uncontrolled sites, which result in the pollution of freshwater sources
