Activity C: Flow rates and dam operation during dry periods (UHANN)

According to the discussions with stakeholders the influence of environmental flow in the management of reservoir releases was prioritised. The activity for the next month (up to Month 30) will be divided into the following tasks:
  •  Literature review related to minimum flow requirements considering results of past studies for comparable catchments (e.g. the Piedmont region)
  • Literature review of proposed adaptation strategies for reservoir releases with respect to
  • suitable indicators,
  • environmental flow requirements,
  • flow variability (dry/wet periods), and
  • naturally driven occurrence of dry periods (temporally)
on EU and international scale
  • Transferability of recommendations for environmental flow to the Flumendosa-Campidano system
  • Review of EU WFD reference conditions definition in Sardinia, and availability of identified relevant factors/parameters/species, with relevance to environmental flow
  • Comparison of suitable indicators with the results gained, with estimation of transferability of available operation schemes and requirements of organisms of suitable operation patterns for supporting environmental flow requirements related to:
      •  time and duration of releases (t),
      • released discharges (m³/s), and
      • flow variability for satisfying needs of organisms, habitats, and sediment transport during dry, medium, and wet years
  • Investigation of effects of different possible operation schemes to related sectors (irrigation, drinking water, and pollution emissions)
  • Identification of most suitable operation plans,
  • Covering different sectoral and temporal variable water demands,
  • Covering water supply of different sectors (%)
  • Duration and effects of possible water restrictions
