Overview and Integration

The case study "Water management in agriculture; Minimum vital flow in low Flumendosa system" will develop around 3 main Activities:

Activity A: Sustainable crop growth in the Campidano/Fluminimannu basin: Determination of irrigation requirements to ensure sustainable agriculture

Activity B: Improvement of agricultural practices to decrease pollutants losses (CNR and Cranfield)

Activity C: Flow rates and dam operation during dry periods (UHANN)

Under extreme conditions (in particular drought conditions) therefore, action plans for a drought management have to be considered in scenarios, which investigates agricultural practices by determining actual provided water resources from the Flumendosa-Campidano system and potential effects of relatively large share of agriculture in the water consumption towards industrial and drinking water supply.

The scope of action C is to use existing drought management plans to identify the boundary conditions for improving the option combinations in the case study area. This will comprise the adaptation and integration of the activities water management in agriculture (A) and improvement of management of agricultural practice to decrease the discharge of pollutants (B) accordingly.

The two actions (A on water management in agriculture and B on the improvement of management of agricultural practice to decrease the discharge of pollutants) run in a parallel way (if possible) and rely on a set of common input data.

Results of specifying environmental flow will be considered in the determination of new boundary conditions, and in the designed scenarios to be used in action A. These scenarios, regarding new proposed irrigation schemes , practices and crop selection, will be used by action B as new scenarios to be modelled to assess the effects of such new management schemes on the water quality status of the river.
