Editorial

"INECO" stands for "Institutional and Economic Instruments for Sustainable Water Management in the Mediterranean Region", and is a Coordination Action Project, supported by the European Commission (6th Framework Programme), in the frame of the Specific Measures in Support of International Cooperation (INCO Programme)-Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC) Thematic Priority.

The INECO  Project brings together 14 institutions from 10 Mediterranean Countries (Greece, France, Italy, Cyprus, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Algeria and Morocco), including public (6), private (7) and international organisations (1). The project was launched on July 1st 2006 and will be completed in June 2009, spanning a duration of 3 years.

INECO' s goal is to introduce an interdisciplinary approach to water management, building upon the integration of three major aspects: environment, economics and society.

INECO will discuss shared problems in the decision-making process and the deficiencies of the present governance structures around the Mediterranean Basin. Research focuses on alternative institutional and economic instruments which can promote equity, economic efficiency and environmental sustainability in water resources management.

The 1st Issue of the INECO Newsletter introduces the overall project objectives and framework. Furthermore, it presents important events and the progress realised during the 1st year of the project, and summarizes the analysis of water management issues, undertaken within its framework in the Damour River Basin of Lebanon.  Finally, the newsletter introduces the website of INECO, at
