The main goals of the Potable Water Sector aim to:
- Full coverage during the next two years through ongoing plans and programs.
- National Project for provision of 240 unserved villages: Its estimated cost is about 2 billion Egyptian Pounds, Funded partially by Arab Fund for Economic & Social Development, with KD 47 M. This project is due for completion by the end of 2002-2007 plan.
Insufficiently provided villages: 55 integrated projects (plants + networks) with total capacity of 3.5 Mm3/d and total cost of about 5 billion Egyptian Pounds.
- 40 extension projects for existing plants, with total capacity of 1.2 Mm3/d and 2.2 billion Egyptian Pounds investments. These projects were awarded to specialized companies for their implementation on priority basis to severely deficient areas and villages.
The main goals of the Sanitary Drainage Sector aim to:
- Completion of full coverage on the rural level till 2022 using advanced economic techniques depending upon:
- New, unconventional economic systems and surface networks, complying with the rural conditions with the safe disposal of treated water.
- Use, whenever possible, of local material for reduction of investment cost.
- Prioritizing the nearly villages to water streams.
- Drain self treatment as unconventional solution pending the completion of sanitary drainage projects in the rural areas in full co-ordination with competent ministries and research entities for raising the self treatment capacity of open drains.
